The countryside is dotted with mobile homes or trailers that often marginal rural people spend much of their lives in. These buildings are often old and somewhat rundown. They are a sad reflection of the poverty of the area, yet also at the same a reflection of the often proud Americans who live in Rural America and work hard to get everything they have. The people that live in trailers in someways are another type of noble savage, battling the nature and the tough rules of the world for all they have.
People who live in trailers are usually pretty bad off. More wealthy people have traded their trailers in for double-wide modular housing or live in real houses. Trailers offer almost no shelter against severe weather, and are cold in the winter. Their occupants often suffer from alcoholism and domestic abuse that is so common in the lower classes of society. They face increasing property taxes on their marginal properties and jobs that move from the countryside to the big city or are totally outsources to other countries.
Yet, at the same time the trailer dweller is a rugged individualist. They have to face the weather on their own, often traveling down many miles of slippery winter roads to get to a poorly paying job. They have to do everything for themselves as few services reach the trailer in the woods, not that they could even afford such services. Some people who live in trailers try to farm on their marginal land and have livestock. Others are proud of their trailers and keep them them up in the best shape, and improve on them by adding new roofs to prevent leaks, add decks or other outdoor attachments. Many people who live in trailers often have American flags reflecting their pride and belief in their country.
There is no way of really telling why people end up living in trailers. Some might live in the ones they were born in, others might choose that lifestyle rather then live in the cities. Many people in trailers own their own 4x4 pickup trucks, sometimes far more valuable their houses. There are many people who find the trailer life a bit nicer then the pressures of living in the city. Trailers aren't an ideal life but for many they are the best life that they can live.
