Bad News for Hungry Cattle

This year has been incredibly warm and lacking in snow. While we have gotten our fair share of ice storms, the reality is much of the winter has been warm and on several occasions bare ground has reared its ugly winter face.

Cows don't care much about the cold, they just huddle together and stay warm. Their owners feed them hay and silage, irrespective of the weather. Mild weather on the other hand has been very good for deer. More deer means more corn crops eaten by deer. Deer like corn, and that's bad for those hungry cows.

At the same time, silage and corn prices have gone through the roof, thanks in part to the demand for ethanol to feed our cars and boost the performance of their gasoline. All which ends up hurting those hungry cattle, which probably wouldn't have minded the cold weather at all.

It's just another story how climate change is effecting all of us. Simply said, our natural world around us is changing, and not necessarily for the better.
