Drugs: A Family and Personal Issue

Drugs can do many bad things to you, when abused. The same is true with anything—if you abuse your driving privledges (speed, drive when your impaired, etc.), you could kill or seriously injure yourself or others. The law says your responsible for your actions at all time, and this is reasonable and sensible. That said, just because your under the influence of a subtances. I don't believe you should be any more less or more responsible for your actions—if you rape somebody while you were subduced by a drug, you should get the same penatlies as if you weren't.The best way to prevent drug abuse, is to discuss drug use with your family. Find your values when it comes to drugs. Should you abstain completely from alcohol, drink in moderation or use alcohol to get you drunk and relaxed? That's something that you and your kids should develop a strong set of values about. Is smoking marajuna something you feel acceptable, or not? It shouldn't be black and white either—drugs aren't bad—they have many benifits.Kids also need to know about drug laws, and the stiff penelities for using them in public, for growing them, for buying or giving them away. They should also know that they aren't neccessarly just laws—and they may need reform—but it's up to them to decide what's right and wrong. Telling your kids that drugs are right or wrong doesn't make sense either. This takes away their ability to set their own morals, and leaves them without a sense what is really right or wrong. Deciding right from wrong is a life-long process. It's not a static. Killing some one isn't neccessarly wrong. Nor is using drugs.
