Last week happened to be crime victims week, the week where we are suppose to reflect upon the loses of those who are effected by the actions of other individuals. We hear sob stories about widows whose husbands are killed by random acts of violence, along with other direct effects of crime. Too often though we forget the real victim of crime: the average citizen.
Crime effects us all. We pay higher taxes to put more cops on the streets to keep us safe. We have to go through burdensome security that leads to a loss of Fifth Amendment rights. Fear from crime and terror leads to curtail First and Second Amendment rights. It is a problem when people are silenced solely for having feelings or thoughts different then mass society. Making guns harder to get makes it nearly impossible for citizens to protect themselves.
You can think of countless examples. Post-Columbine society went on witch-hunts and burned kids that spoke or thought differently. There was no substantive need for these losses of rights except playing to pure fear. The net result was that we allowed the criminal to win and the regular citizen to lose. Likewise, after the horrible slaying of John Kennedy and his great brother Bobby we saw vague and bad law like the Gun Control Act of 1968. This caused countless reductions of personal protection and defense against aggressive government. We all where victims of crime.
These accounts of loss liberties reflect the need for a strong and fair judicial system whose ONLY goal should be protecting the civil liberties of all. We have to punish those that not only directly hurt other individuals, but also indirectly hurt the rest of us by limiting our very own liberties. District Attorneys have a very important job to do, with much precision and care. Unfortunately, most district attorney offices are understaffed and ran by bureaucratic regimes that fail to take account for the real victims of crime.
