Cameras on the Street

I have no problem with there being security cameras on the street. I don't particularly like people being voyerstic, and staring at me all the time, but I think cameras can do a lot to keep people honest. There is no expectation of privacy on the street, as anybody can see you walking on by, but at the same time we all have to be concerned about people spying on you.

There is no real difference between police and perverts spying on you and your children. I'm not sure if I support survellence as much as recording tapes, and using them should somebody claim that a crime has been committed. Clearly, if police are just watch tapes for political reasons, or harass people, then that is a problem. Yet, if that happens, it should be a violation of the law, punishable the same way that other perverts are treated.

We need to be clear on our policies when it comes to cameras on the streets. There needs to be review of all agencies using surrevelence cameras, to ensure they are only being used as witnesses to crime, and not for voyerism. If there is no voyerism going on, then there should be no problem with cameras being on the street.
