The abortion debate and our pro-life culture disgusts me to the highest degree. It's an artifical debate on the nature of life based on a psuedo-reading of the holy scripture. It not only demeans the human spirit but also the book that many of us subscribe to for living our lives accordingly.

If we were talking about calves we wouldn't be having discussions about the first, second, or third trimester abortions. To save the higher value heifer we wouldn't think twice about aborting the calves' life. Those fetuses would be burried or shipped off to a rendering plant to make a derived product.

Now humans aren't cows. People grow to be a much different shape and to be far more intelligent. We don't moo or chew on grass all day. Indeed, we were the chosen ones to govern the earth with our superior capabilities by evolution ultimately overseen by god.

People become people by their experiences. Nothing in a mother's womb resembles the world a person will come to know when he is born. Neither a calf nor a human learns anything before he or she is born. God's gift is the world he provides us to live in. We have a great power gained through evolution and the learning process. We have far greater powers then any other animal to choose what is going to live and die.

We need to respect life. But it's not a matter of fetuses. It's a question of how humans live and how we nurish their desires for freedom and a healthy and productive environment. Humans should not live a life a slavery nor should they live in poverty. People should use contraception and avoid unnecessary pregnancies. Abortion like all killing is an emotional procedure that should be avoided when not required. It wastes resources that could otherwise be better used to enhance life.

Yet, compared to the life of an out-of-wedlock child or that of a parents who are too old and unable to care fully for their kids it's a good procedure when used when it can be used safely and with minimal moral quam. Still, regardless of what you think of it, abortion isn't a great evil.
