Finally Graduating

Six years ago I wrote on my Freshman Orientation Class, I wrote that my goals for college were “to cultivate my flowers to be more then something that you invest in”—an old Bob Dylan adage. In many ways I think I lived up to that motto in my college experience and challenged myself to do more and be a better person.

This Spring, after I complete my Assembly Internship I will finally be graduating. It's been a six year ride through four different college, a rocky road to say the least. I've seen a lot of things and been a lot of places that other people never got to do while they were in college. I worked on a number of causes and made some positive changes in the system.

Probably the most important thing I learned from college is it's fun to work like hell, and not to worry much about the future or the silly things you run into in your day to day life. And remember, some of you experiences in college are going to downright horrible. You'll be spending nights crying in your pickup truck driving around Chazy around midnight. You'll get knocked hard on the ground, but get up.

Just don't be afraid. Never back down. Always fight—but be ready to cut your loses on any one cause—all for the greater good. Be a character in college, be somebody who is memorable. Be a leader, be an individual. Defy the social order. Stand up to the college President. All people over 30, after all, are frauds.

It's so important to do cool things that are different. Ride a mechanical bull. Make your words well known on the radio. Drive to Malone once or twice just for the hell of it. But whatever you do, respect yourself and the environment around you. And make sure think a lot. Just don't worry too much.
