Thoughts on College and Education...: I've put together some of my thoughts on why we go to college, among other things.
Today, I went back to my High School. All I can say, is it's gotten worst—it's far more oppressive of an enviroment then when I graduated a year ago—it's just terrible.
As soon as you walk in, you notice the oppressive nature of it. The attendence officer sits, guarding the front door—the only one that is ever unlocked. She watches exactly who enters and leaves the school—basically like a prison.
She must stare at everybody as they enter the school, always suspecting they are going to do something sinister. All teachers must have visible ID on them at all times (talk about absurd—the school only has about 40 total faculity—including support staff). The high school alone has only 400-500 students.
Were not talking some violent inter-city school either, this is Greenville High School, located in rural northern Greene county. All guests are suppost to sign in—including Alumni, even after school—although the time I went their in Decemember, they didn't make me do that.
Did I mention the great threat of terrorism and school shootings in a cow high school? I guess the state ed. dept. thinks it's a great threat. Every class has emergency plans in case of such an unlikely instance, not to mention they now have to do drills for both of those senarios.
Of course, there is no question that some students have access to guns. Yet, most of greater society also has access to guns. Almost everybody who is of legal age to own a gun, and going hunting is responsble enough not to cause problems. Deer hunting is a perfectly valid sport—so why are we attacking guns in general? Students who drive pickup trucks are a threat to society?
In a rural school, everybody knows everybody, and often quite a bit about their background. Last year, it wasn't exactly a secret that Luke Klob's dad ran the farm he lives on, the HillBilly drinking club or that I waste way to much of my time on the computer. I think any kind of a plot would be difficult.
I'm sure not conforming—ie. walking in a hall at the wrong time, without a pass, or being late from lunch is a definate no, no, with strict, draconian punishment. Probably far worst, then when I was in High School.
How can their be productive education, in such a cold, black and white environment—producing enlightened thinkers to build and challenge tommorow's world? Students are afraid to say the wrong thing—as high schoolers have no guarantees of academic freedom, instead, the threat of suspension and procecution for writing something too controversual. So good ideas, are killed, and students leave school learning nothing—feelings that live throughout their early lives in college—why else would 18-25 years olds have such a disinterest in politics?
Maybe that's just a laten function
I have to say Give Me A Break! How much of my tax money, and that of my parents and friends has been wasted on this security crap? Aren't we suppost to be educating students in High School, instead of frieghting them, labeling them, and turning them into cattle.
Heck, I don't think it's right to treat cows this way either.
