Trent Lott and the Black Lobby

It was simply unfair what the NAACP did to Trent Lott. It is a failure of democracy. Democracy is the worst system out there, except for all the others, as Winston Churchill used to like to say. The great problem with democracy is everybody is trying to drive the same car using 290 million different drivers behind one wheel.

Interest groups like NAACP bicker over the details of how to run the country and everybody wants to take the country in their own ways. We at times reach some consensus, but only after we beat each other up with words and powerful ideologies. Trent Lott learned the wrong way how not to deal with the NACCP. One little indiscresion and the complaining of the NAACP destroyed a political career. The man praised the good work of Strom Thrumond at his 100th Brithday Party for his great service and work on state rights, something that raised the heckels of a small but powerful black minority.

It is not surprising that the NAACP is not a friend of the Republicans. Nor is it surpising that they wanted to destroy Trent Lott. To railroad a man for one little comment is just terrible. Politicians should be held to a higher standard. However, should they be held to such a standard that any word out of their mouth that could lead them being kicked out of the game?

I have never supported segregation, and I believe that African Americans have an important role in our society. I just think that the NAACP did a diservice not only to Trent Lott, but to African Americans as a whole. We should embrace a diversity of opinions, and celebrate the legacy of great politicans, even if we don't neccessarly agree with all their historical positions.
