War in Iraq: Dumb Idea

It doesn't take some kind of psuedo-genius to know that war with Iraq will have negative consquences. It's going to be damn expensive (with America footing the bill, mostly in whole). It's going to create tuberlance and instability in America society. It will strain the concepts of law and order, as never before seen.

Damn Expensive!

They say war with Iraq will cost over $100 billion, in just military expenses. Paid for, of course, almost totally by the US of A. Especially if we get nobody else on board. But that's not the only effect. It will continue to distort the US economy further away from peace time production, to the tools of war.

Don't forget the added potential costs of the war, on oil prices. While the US has large amounts of oil on reserve, compared to the oil crisis of '73, there is no guarantee that OPEC holding us hostige again, might not increase prices. And with steep increases in oil prices, that leads to steep increases in inflation, resulting quite possibly into a future era of stagflation.

An Unstable, Divided Country

Remember, 1968 when the country was so divided? Already people are divided on the issue, if US should attack Iraq or not. Dissent is not just from radicals, many liberals and moderates are shying away from war. That means, a large portion of our country has it's doubts on war.

How can we have a war without the support of the masses? Won't the President find himself in the middle of a great war, with supporters and people against the war against him?

Law and Order's Death?

How can we expect other nations to respect international law, if we so break it? If we are the aggressor, shouldn't Iraq have the right to attack the US? The Iraqi government may be evil, but that does not provide a legal reason for an attack.

America and the Industrial world as a whole, is based on the idea of logical procedure, that people as a society agree to as a whole. Attacking Iraq, right now seems to be a clear departure from that philosophy.
