Family Vacation in Maine

Vacation can be fun, but also stressful if done wrong.

August 12, 2002

Lake George is Crazy !: If you plan to go on vacation in the Adirondacks, don't go to Lake George.

That Small Town Feeling: Why sometimes going to a ‘nowhere’ is the best vacation place.

Family Vacation in Maine

Too Much Demand

I guess that would be the best way to describe the first part of the trip. Got traffic? If you saw the lines getting off and on the MassPike, you'd say yes. Of course the MassPike wasn't nearly as crazy, as I-290 and I-495. These roads wouldn't be so bad, if it weren't for the wonderful Massachuttes road design, that makes New York State roads look safe and slow. For major interstates, with lots of traffic, they seem to have awful short exit and enterance ramps. All at 65 MPH.

Bleh. That isn't exactly what I call fun. Throw in some left-handed exits, and traffic tends to backup. Why Massachuttes can't have standardized interstates, that make sense like New York State, I don't know. And to make it more fun, you get to go onto I-95, which at this point has 4 lanes each directions, and the typical Massachuttes no-real-entry-ramps.

Lots of ugly rusted bridges in Massachuttes. And they have high taxes. Lots of traffic. The spirt of America? I guess it's totally a matter of perspective. If anything, the spirt of America isn't Massachuttess but upstate New York. Maybe it's totally a cultural thing. I don't really know.

Only went around one rotary today, in New Hampshire. It was a big traffic circle, on Route 1 below Hampton, and it was less then exciting. But lots of splits and things in the road, and of course those werid post-stop lights. They try hard to confuse you (or make you pay attention), in New England. I guess it's tradition, but it sure is werid at times.

The Ocean

Yeah, I saw that today. It still sells like salt, and of course there is lots of sand to get in your shoes, or at least rocks to trip on. At any rate, got to take some really nice piictures—it's really impressive. Pictures are going to be great in the evening, but the actual value of going there, seems worthless—to spend hours traveling to take some pictures?

It's big. Lots of ships go on it, tonight I saw many sailships on it, right after sunset. It's just great—I love it all. I guess when you look at the ocean, and it's amazing power, it is nothing disapointing. It's something so great, that mankind has never tried to tame it, except in the cases of sailing it, and extendeding or protecting their land.

Live Free or Die

That's the state motto. It's on every license plate. But now minors have to be buckled up in this state. Go figure, what that ever so controversual motto really means. I've seen a lot pickup trucks around here, but not much of the way of burn barrels, but I guess, that's because this area is pretty suburban, and of course New Hampshire's probably unenforced statewide ban.

They seem to be proud of Patrick Henery-based motto, you see it around on lots of signs and stuff. In this part of the touristy-taticy seacoast, I guess your not going to see much to the contray. LIke anybody in their right mind would want to live in this part of the State. Forget about seeing gun nuts or anything a bit radical around here, in this largerly conservative state.

Bah, maybe I'll put on some lousey Top-40 Country station and go to bed. Enough with this, I think the die part is probably most appropiate right now.

Pig Rape

Go to any city, you'll find them. At least in the country, they aren't screwing people as much. But go into hampton, and yu'll see those obsence pigs writing tickets, raping people, and of coure towing cars. They are suppost to work for America, but instead they rape America.

As you can probably guess, there is a lot of pigs in Hampton. They exist for only one purpose, to harrass, and to keep the prviledged few happy. Why else would they be around?

Okay, maybe police do have a purpose, they help keep things safe and ordorly—would you like it if you couldn't get a parking space, because some idiot was blocking off a parking lot? Or so many other problems. So maybe not all pigs are bad people, assuming you stay on the right side of them.

The Not-So-Hot Ocean

Okay, when we went to Hampton Beach (well, actually the one above it—$10 a day, one), the water tempeture was about 70 F. That wasthe hottest water tempeture of the week, after that, it just got cooler. When we went to the beach on Saturdy, the one in Ogunquit, Maine, it was only 57 F (very, very cold).

But the ocean was the coolest place around to be it. With the sea breeze, tempetatures were bareble, compared to the weather I heard they had inland (especially in places like Albany). The warm sun, was nothing short of great, laying on the beach. The cool water to cool you off. I can still imagine the nice sea breeze.

The waves were great fun to play in, with the body-board, my parents bought. So nice and cool. The sounds of the people, and the waves coming in. Summer, summer, summer... It was nice there. The sand was warm, as was sitting on the beach, enjoying the rays.

And of course, there was my sister pushing us to go to the beach, every freaking day it was warm out, and at least somehow remotely possible for us to do just that.

Of course, the beach does have a downside. The blistering sun, burns where ever sunscreen doesn't cover, sand sticks everywhere, and that salt water makes everything sticky and icky.

Purty Sunsets

While the Sunset sets to the West, and not over the ocean, it was very pretty and powerful. I was out 4 days in the evening, along the coast, taking some wonderful pictures—not that it could come close to the true beauty of the area.

The sun had such a nice color, over the sea bogs, and left shades of red and purple all over the ocean. As you can see from the photos, it was nothing short of amazing.

It's Just Not The Same

Some how being away from home, just wasn't the same. There was no 'real' room to escape to, no places where I could truly get away and be alone. I didn't have my car, nor was a place a quiet and rural as Partridge Run, just a stone throw away.

I really like being alone. It gives my the opporunity to think, and be myself. That was something I never could do there. Things were so different there too, everything from road design, houses, and people were not what I was used to. I felt so strange, so naive there.

I guess to vacation, you have to depend. You have to live within the norms of their society. Go figure.
