Thanksgiving 2005

It already is that Thanksgiving time of year again. Time to start thinking about the holidays, and the upcoming year. For many of us it is a time of intense reflect on what we have done over the past year, how we have changed, and most importantly whom we should give thanks too. Last year, I noted there were several different groups of people whom we should thank each year, and this year I propose one more: ourselves.

It sounds rather narcissistic to thank ourselves. Yet, all action ultimately results from personal choices, be it yourself or somebody else. You really can not control other individual's actions, as humans are autonomous, but you can control your own. All of you world is created by yourself, and the worst of your life is ultimately defined by one individual: yourself.

How did you make the world a better place this year? Did you hold the door open for somebody? Did you help a blind man cross the street? Did you work on an election campaign and work towards getting better candidates into office? Did you make change in yourself that ultimately benefited us all?

Thanksgiving is a time for family, for getting together, for sharing. You are a big part of your family, and give thanks for once not only for your whole family, but also for yourself. If you value yourself as an individual, you also value all the other individuals in the world. Share your flowers to be with all the world around you.

This thanksgiving, give thanks to God for all the gifts that he has given to us. Remember that you and everybody else around you are a gift of god, and that you have done much that we all can be thankful for this thanksgiving.
