Rich Vermont, Poor Plattsburgh

Why I love Plattsburgh and not the elitist culture of Vermont.

Blue Highway to Manchester: Not only is Molly Stark Highway beautiful, it's nearly as fast as the Masspike.

Northern Vermont: Exploring a place so near yet so foreign.

Notes from Vermont: What I saw and experienced on my little trip to Vermont.

Vermont's Uplanders v. Flatlanders: In Vermont politics they sometimes talk about the great divides in politics.

Rich Vermont, Poor Plattsburgh

Increasingly it seems that Vermont is a state being ran by an elite few that seek to market the state for rich tourists to spend their money. Some of it may be cultural in a state that largely rural, but some of it is also the choice of public policy. Vermont has tough land use regulations that protect farm land and forest, but also represent the stimying of freedom and anti-elitism we know in New York.

Vermont's central city is Burlington, a college town like Plattsburgh. It has much of the same kind of sprawl that the town of Plattsburgh has, yet it's much higher class. Their is a Walmart in Burlington, but it's much looked down upon by the rich, as is commericalism tucked in a New England wrapper.

Vermont is a state that represents policy by a liberal elite. Government should be about protecting freedom, and giving all equal access to the resources it needs. It should not be about pinko leftism, that seeks to hide modernity in an old time shell. Cow lawn orienments and fancy farm steads do a poor job of hiding the problems that modern farming faces to day.

We all are humans at the end of the day, and we all have sometimes crass wishes and desires. Plattsburgh might represent some of the crudism of modern life, but hiding it under the cover of nice looking buildings and fake politicians simply will not cover it.
