Thanks to Big Oil and Coal

Tommorow is thanksgiving. And it's being brought to you, as is every day, by burning lots of coal and consuming lots of bunker fuel to keep your lights on, move your product, and bring it cheaply to your table as we heat and pollute the plant.

Not only will it be bringing that turkey to your table, and all the fixin's for a 11% premium over last year, it will also be bringing cancer, poverty, and environmental desecration to your table. A rather dark overtone, to our holiday, that’d we’d rather be in denial about.

We all have to wonder if there is a better way we could live. Could we build a society that's closer to the first thanksgiving, where prosperity was not build on the exploitation of others? Could we all live a little bit closer to nature?

Relatively few of us raised the bird, much less slaughtered the bird that we will be eating tomorrow. We have no idea of all the blood, guts, or feathers that once made up the bird. We didn't have to shovel all that bird manure, or apply it to our fields. That was somebody's else's problem, somebody else’s pollution.

A select few of us could make more elite choices, and make our consciences feel better. We could raise our own turkeys, buy an organic one, or have venison for thanksgiving. That would make us feel so much more virtuous, after driving back in our gasoline swelling pickup trucks. Take your Prius to the store, and your bound to feel even more virtuous.

Make sure to rush out on Friday morning to those specials at stores. Avoid those toys that have too much lead in them, as it’s better to let your kids be exposed to other environmental pollutants. They need more things contribute to your friendly local landfill – after all, that’s what keeps our economy going. Recycling the plastic bags and cardboard boxes things come in will improve your virtue further.

And most of all, have a great Thanksgiving.
