Our Cowboy President

I like President Bush even if I disagree with him politically. The man is a passionate politician who cares enough to run as President. There is a lot of prestige in following in your father's footsteps but is the truly a rational to be at the level to be the President? President Bush must believe in what he does is the right thing, and that he is making meaningful change, but that does not mean he is right.

We don't really understand for sure why he chose to have a public life, we must respect the significant financial sacrifices he made to be Governor of Texas then the President of the United States, not to mention the time he gives up. He's very wealthy already, but had he gone into private business he could have made far more money. President Bush might not work as hard as other Presidents, he still works very hard for a job that pays relatively little money.

He's a man of the land who chooses to live in Rural America on his cattle ranch. He cares about our agricultural heritage and continues to engage in farming despite all the pressures against that. He might have hired hands to run his ranch and might never get to close to the cows and the presents they leave, he at least believes in farming enough to continue the ranch he lives in.

He's kind of a fake cowboy. Everybody knows President Bush never gets his hands dirty shoveling cow dung, despite the fact he gets his picture taken showing him cutting brush. He has a beautiful 1,500 acre patch of land but with only five cows not the hundreds that most people have. That doesn't really qualify as a ranch or even him as a cowboy. It's clear his hired hands do most of the work for him as his priority is and should be governing. There's a time to farm, a time to politic.

He also represents values and the frustrations of the working class with a government that constantly works against them. Too many people who actually do work the land or make our country run are overburdened by taxes that overwhelming sock the poor and leave the rich poorly taxes. Working class people face regulations and laws that specifically impact them but not the rich. He uses his populist charm to suggest that he is doing the right thing for average people who might just own more then five cows or fix people's cars.

To own a nice pickup truck, dog, some cows, or wear cowboy hat you don't have to be a conservative reactionary. Indeed, if you care about Rural America and the free life, you would be a Democrat and would oppose policies that would ultimately take away all those things. What will happen when there is no country left with it all divided up into sprawl controlled by massive interests? President Bush might still be able to play a fake cowboy, but nobody else could afford to live the free farm life.

There is an alternative. We can represent the basic down to earth conservatism where we both respect our environment and who we all are as individuals. We can make good personal choices like our President has made, but then also carry such good and respectful beliefs into the political realm without imposing our own beliefs on others.
