Those Extra Twenty Hours

I know a lot of people who have picked up second jobs, often exceeding 20 hours or more a week. The reason is not only to pick up additional wages, but to pick up benefit coverage at a reasonable rate. Many of these people are self-employed, work for small companies, or are temporary employees. At their primary occupation, they may be well compensated for their hard work, but do not have the ability to be part of a bargaining unit or company that provides health care.

My wages at my job are probably compared to my friends on the low-end. Yet, I work for the state so I get health care nearly for free, while many others do not have the option for health care at an affordable rate. So they work a second job, and work long extra hours, just to put in enough time to obtain health care at a reasonable rate.

This unfair. Everybody should be entitled to have at least basic access to emergency care, without jumping through extra hoops. If a person wants to be entrepreneur or simply doesn't want to work a major corporation, he should not be required to put in era hours to just to ensure they have access to health care. I don't care how they get it done, but there needs to be a way to ensure that all Americans can get health care at an affordable rate.
